Santa Barbara, Calif. - The 2001 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos overwhelmed a strong alumni contingent Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, 21-6. The Gauchos used a second-inning home run by senior shortstop Jeff Bannon and a long ball by sophomore right fielder Ryan Spilborghs in a 17-run sixth inning to bury the alumni.
The big Gaucho sixth quickly erased a 5-4 alumni lead. Down 4-0, the alumni got on the board in the fifth when Texas Rangers infielder Mike Young (1995-97) hit a two-run homer, and took the lead in the sixth when Chris Johnson (1992-93) clubbed a three-run blast. However, having already used its top five hurlers, the alumni pitching staff was fortunate to make it through the sixth inning. Junior transfer Matt Moran (Consumnes River College) got the start for UCSB on the mound, throwing four scoreless innings.
UCSB will open its 2001 season Friday, February 2, in the first game of a three-game series at 2000 College World Series participant San Jose State. The Gauchos will play their home opener Saturday, February 11 when they host Oregon State for an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader.
