UCSB Baseball Falls Again To San Jose State 6-3
Feb. 15, 2003
San Jose, Calif. - A solid pitching performance by UC Santa Barbara (2-7) starting pitcher Sean Thompson quickly turned sour when he and the Gaucho bullpen corps couldn't maintain a three run lead. San Jose State (4-2) scored six times in the 7th inning to capture the lead and the game 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Thompson (0-2) surrendered only two hits entering the fateful seventh. Three straight batters reached base including a two run homer by pinch-hitter Travis Becktel. After Thompson allowed his fourth hit of the inning he was relieved by Alex McRobbie. Ivan Ramirez was soon called in to finish the inning when McRobbie was pulled before recording an out. The Spartans sent 12 batters to the plate before it was over. DH Nick Guerra collected two singles during the onslaught. Guerra ended the day 3-for-4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI.
UCSB jumped to an early lead when 2B Chris Malec led off the 2nd inning with a bomb over the right field fence. Unfortunately for Malec, and the rest of the Gauchos, he twisted his ankle on the swing and was unable to continue play.
Single runs in the 4th and 5th innings were the only other runs Santa Barbara was able to produce. First baseman Bill Rowe recorded an RBI by grounding out and bringing in Nate Sutton, who had earlier doubled. Matt Wilkerson doubled in Greg Powers with two outs in the next inning.
Santa Barbara catcher Chad Ziemendorf continued to hit the ball well, collecting two hits and a walk in his four plate appearances.
San Jose starter Mike Dorsa pitched well enough in five innings to get his first win on the season. Andy Cook took the mound for the final two innings to record his second save this year.
The third and final game of the series is at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Municipal stadium in San Jose. UCSB returns home to face visiting UCLA on Tuesday, February 18th at 2:00 pm at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
