Two freshman pitchers battle it out on Tuesday. The two right handers will each make their first collegiate start. The Gauchos send Michael Martin (0-0) to the hill. The right hander has made three appearances this year, recording four strikeouts and picking up a save against then No.11 Houston. Martin has not allowed a run all season. The Bruins give the ball to right hander Hector Ambriz. Ambriz (0-1) sports a 8.53 ERA.
UCLA holds a 5-5 record this season. They are led by coaching legend Gary Adams. Adams sports a 927-767-7 record in his 29 years at UCLA and accumulated over 1100 career victories at the collegiate level. In 2002, the Bruins finished 26-35 overall and 9-15 in the Pac-10, ranking them seventh. UCLA battled a talented North Carolina State team last weekend at home. The Bruins won the first two games of the series, but were defeated on Sunday, 8-6.
UCLA's high powered offense is led by redshirt freshman Chris Denove and junior infielder Preston Griffin. Denove carries a .385 clip, leads the team with four doubles and tied for the team lead with 13 RBI. Griffin also carries a .385 average and leads the team in home runs with four. Griffin smashed two home runs and tallied five RBI in the loss to N.C. State on Sunday. The Bruins are batting .302 as a team and are outscoring their opponents, 78-73.
On the hill, the Bruins are led by senior left hander Mike Kunes and junior Casey Janssen. Kunes, a perfect 2-0, sports a 3.44 ERA and has pitched a team high 18.1 innings, striking out 12. Janssen leads the team with 17 strikeouts and carries a record of 1-1. UCLA's pitching staff has a team ERA of 6.00, allowing 73 in their first 10 games.
The Bruins lead the Gauchos, 50-31 in head-to-head competition. The two teams met twice last season. In the first game, UCLA defeated the Gauchos 12-7 at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles. In game two, the visiting Bruins defeated UCSB, 18-13, out hitting UC Santa Barbara, 23-13. The Gauchos last win against UCLA came in 2001.
