SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior left-handed pitcher Mario Hollands was named Big West Pitcher of the Week after throwing eight shutout innings last weekend, the conference announced on Monday.
Hollands allowed just two hits over his eight scoreless frames as the Gauchos blanked San Jose State, 7-0. The El Cerrito native struck out four and walked three, facing just two batters over the minimum in his 105-pitch outing.
This is the third consecutive season that Hollands has pitched marvelously in his debut. Last year he tossed eight innings of shutout ball against Cal State Bakersfield, allowing four hits while striking out six and in 2008 he opened his UCSB career with six shutout innings and eight strikeouts vs. Marist.
Hollands, who was a Freshman All-American and the Big West's Freshman Pitcher of the Year in 2008, won his second Big West Pitcher of the Week award in as many seasons. Last year Hollands captured the award after throwing a complete game one-hitter vs. Loyola Marymount.
The Gauchos face LMU in Los Angeles on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and then travel for a three-game series at Stanford next weekend. UCSB does not return home until a four-game weekend series beginning Friday, Mar. 12 vs. Northern Illinois.
