Baseball Team, Individuals Among National Leaders In Several Categories

UC Santa Barbara is off to a good start, the NCAA Division I baseball statistics confirmed Monday.
The Gauchos, who enter their weekend series with visiting UC Riverside at 22-8, lead the nation in hitting with a .354 average, nine points ahead of second place Georgia Tech. UCSB is seventh in scoring, averaging 9.10 runs per game. New Mexico State leads the NCAA with an 11 runs per game average. Georgia Tech is second at 10.33.
Individually, junior first baseman Tyler Von Schell is fifth in the nation in home runs per game, putting balls in the cheap seats at the rate of 0.41 per contest. Senior third baseman Dave Molidor is 37th in hitting, with a .426 batting average. Senior lefthanded pitcher Rylie Ogle is tied for seventh in the country with seven wins.
UCSB will host UC riverside in a non-conference series this weekend, before playing at USC mid-week and opening its Big West Conference season at Cal State Northridge next weekend.
