SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
After defeating USC on April 13, the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (19-18) took two out of three games from UCLA last weekend. The Gauchos hope to stay hot against Los Angeles' Pac-10 teams as they head south to face the 24th-ranked Trojans on Tuesday evening.
Freshman designated hitter Matt Aidem is currently pacing the team with a .378 batting average. Aidem came up big in Friday's 9-4 victory over UCLA as he tripled with the bases loaded. Senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson is leading Santa Barbara with 8 home runs and 36 RBI. Senior catcher Matt Kalafatis recorded the Gauchos' first inside-the-park home run in 18 years in Saturday's 9-8 loss to UCLA.
Winners of 12 of their last 16 games, USC, took last weekend off, dropping its last game, 9-8 to the Gauchos on April 13 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Trojans are led by catcher Jeff Clement, who has a team-leading .355 batting average, eight home runs, 29 RBI and 72 total bases. Tuesday's starting pitcher Jack Spradlin is 3-1 with a 3.36 ERA in six starts this year.
After Tuesday's affair with USC, the Gauchos will host Cal Poly this weekend in a three-game Big West Conference match-up. Friday's series opener is slated to begin at 2:00 pm. The games on Saturday and Sunday are each scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
