Baseball Duo Sweeps Big West Pitcher, Player Of The Week Awards
April 30, 2001
UC Santa Barbara pitcher Jim Bullard (So., Bishop Amat HS) and second baseman Chad Peshke (Sr., Redondo Beach HS) have been named Big West Pitcher and Player of the week, the conference announced today.
Bullard threw the best game of his career and first career complete game Sunday as the Gauchos shut down Pacific to complete a three-game Big West sweep of the visitors. Bullard allowed just one unearned run on six hits to get the win and improve to 7-2 on the year. He also struck out six men and walked just one. The complete game was the sixth by a Gaucho pitcher this season, but the first in which UCSB did not allow an earned run.
Peshke had one of the most productive series by a Gaucho this season. He went 7-for-11 with four doubles and seven runs scored. He hit and scored in each game. Saturday, Peshke went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs. He either scored or drove in every one of UCSB's runs in the 5-2 win.
Bullard is the third Gaucho starting pitcher to earn conference honors (Ogle, Garcia), while Peshke is the third position player (Bannon, Kolbach). UCSB (32-11, 7-2) is currently second in the Big West, one game behind Cal State Fullerton.
