The UC Santa Barbara baseball team comes in to todays game against UCLA with a 17-25 overall and 3-9 Big West Conference record. The Gauchos has a bye this weekend from Big West action, but had two week-day games, losing to USC, 11-7, on Wednesday, and then rebounding the next day to defeat Westmont 14-3.
The Bruins Of Westwood
UCLA comes into todays game sporting a similiar record of 19-26 with a 5-7 showing in Pac-10 play. The Bruins, coached by Gary Adams (915-753-7 in his 28th year at UCLA), went 1-2 over the weekend hosting Washington State. The Bruins are batting .296 as a team, led by Adam Berry (.311, 15 HR, 39 R, 43 RBI) and Ben Francisco (.368, 6HR, 42 R, 37 RBI). The pitching staff has an ERA of 5.43, led by Wes Whisler (4-2, 3.82, 45 K, 61.1 IP) and Mike Kunes (6-3, 4.08, 53 K, 64 IP). The Gauchos and Bruins met earlier this season on Feb. 26 in Los Angeles, with the Bruins coming out on top, 12-7.
Whoopin' On Westmont
The win over Westmont last Thursday snapped a five-game losing streak for UCSB. Matt Wilkerson homered twice in the win and eight-of the-nine offensive starters had a base hit. Eric Posthumus (4-1) picked up the win, going six strong innings. The Gauchos probably wish they could schedule more games against the local college in Montecito, as they trounced the Warriors 16-5 in their previous meeting on March 26. In that game, the Gauchos scored a run in every inning for the first time since 1985, when they did so against Chapman College. Posthumus also picked up the win in that game.
The two homers hit against Westmont, added to the one hit the previous day against USC gave Matt Wilkerson three for the week and 13 one the season. The 13 homers by Trabuco Hills, Calif., native puts him in a tie with Jared Janke ('93-'96) for the UCSB single-season record for home runs by a freshman. The Bruins are all too familiar with Wilkerson, as he smacked three homers against them in their previous meeting.
