UC Santa Barbara's James Garcia was named Big West Pitcher of the Week today, the conference announced.
Garcia got his first save of the year Tuesday, allowing one hit in one scoreless inning of work in UCSB's 5-4 win in 12 innings at Long Beach State. Friday, Garcia came back to throw his third complete game in his last four starts, holding the 49ers to four runs, two earned, on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two, helping the Gauchos to an 11-4 Big West triumph over the visitors.
Garcia has won his last eight decisions, and has allowed three earned runs or less in his last 11 starts. It was the second time Garcia earned Pitcher of the Week honors this season. UCSB pitchers Rylie Ogle and Jim Bullard have also been honored, as have hitters Jeff Bannon, Jared Schumaker, Mike Kolbach and Chad Peshke.
UCSB, ranked 23rd nationally by Collegiate Baseball, will play a three-game Big West series at top-ranked and Big West-leading Cal State Fullerton beginning Friday, May 11.
