SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior right-hander Matthew Vedo was named the Big West's Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, after Vedo tossed a complete-game against Cal State Northridge last weekend.
Vedo was making a spot start for an injured pitcher and tossed his second complete game of the season in a 5-1 victory on Sunday. He threw 123 pitches, allowed just four hits, one run - unearned - and struck out a career-high nine batters.
The Colusa, Calif. native retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced, including 13 in a row at one point, and then finished off the Matadors by retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced.
The only time Vedo allowed a runner past second base came when CSUN scratched across a run in the sixth inning.
It is the second time this season the transfer from Yuba College has been given the award. He also earned it after his March 19 outing when he allowed just one hit to Nevada.
The Gauchos play at No. 13 UCLA on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast live on AM 1290 and online here.
UCSB does not return home until May 13 vs. UC Irvine. Tickets are available by calling (805) 893-UCSB or online by clicking here.
