SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara Assistant Coach Bob Townsend has recently been hired to manage the Colleyville, Texas Lonestars of the newly formed and highly touted Texas Collegiate League for the summer of 2004. The Lonestars will field a highly competitive and motivated group of players from top NCAA Division 1 powerhouses.
Townsend recently finished his fourth season as a coach with the Gaucho baseball program. The former UCSB player assists Head Coach Bob Brontsema with all aspects of the team, specifically hitting instruction, outfield, recruiting, field construction and maintenance.
In 1991 Townsend founded, organized and managed the Santa Barbara Foresters, compiling an impressive overall record of 131-45 in the first four years of the team's existence. The Foresters, a summer collegiate baseball team that is associated with the National Baseball Congress is comprised of college players from across the country.
Townsend is expected to return to UCSB in the fall to continue as an assistant under Brontsema for the 2005 collegiate baseball season.
