June 4, 2003

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior catcher Chad Ziemendorf became the second Gaucho player drafted in the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 23rd round.

Ziemendorf joined junior pitcher Matt Vasquez as drafted Gauchos in 2003.

As a junior in 2003, Ziemendorf started behind the plate in 49 of UCSB's 52 games. He batted .250 with a team-leading six home runs and 28 RBI, the second-highest total on the squad. In addition, the native of Los Altos, Calif. collected seven doubles, 33 runs scored and 40 hits. Ziemendorf also threw out nearly 36-percent of would-be base stealers. During one stretch late in the season, he belted home runs in a school-record four consecutive games.

Ziemendorf, a transfer from Mission College, had his sophomore year cut short because of injuries, playing in just 12 games.
