SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Mario Hollands added another honor to his growing list as he was named to the All-Ping! Baseball Freshman Second Team.
Hollands, a redshirt freshman, started a team-high 14 games for the Gauchos in 2008. He posted a 7-3 record with an earned run average of 4.03. The southpaw struck out 61 batters and walked 26 in 82.2 innings of work. The El Cerrito, Calif. native rung up his first career complete game in a 10-2 victory over 12th-ranked Cal State Fullerton in early May. Hollands gave up just four hits and struck out five Titan batters.
Hollands was named the Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year as he was ninth in the league in ERA and wins and second in home runs allowed. In addition, he was selected a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
Keeping sharp over the summer months, Hollands is currently pitching for the Cotuit Kettleers in the competitive Cape Cod League. He's appeared in just two games for a total of four innings thus far.
