SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Beginning with a three-game series against an unfamiliar foe in Marist College of New York, the UC Santa Barbara baseball team's 2008 schedule again looks to be one of the toughest in the country, highlighted by 16 games against 2007 NCAA qualifiers and 24 games against a Big West Conference that sent four teams to last year's playoffs.
The 56-game schedule will feature 29 games slated to be played at UCSB's Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Gauchos will begin their season on February 22 at home against Marist. After the series with the Red Foxes, the Gauchos will then play ten of their next eleven games on the road, including a three-game set at the University of Houston from March 7-9, before returning home for twelve straight games against Cal Poly, Southern Utah, Saint Mary's, Westmont and Cal State Northridge, with the latter signaling the start of conference play on March 28.
The 2008 conference schedule appears to be as challenging as any in recent memory. Twelve of the Gauchos 24 conference games will pit them against four teams that qualified for the 2007 NCAA tournament. UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Riverside all earned regional berths last season with Irvine and Fullerton each reaching the College World Series in Omaha.
The rest of the Gauchos' games against 2007 NCAA qualifiers are at UCLA on Feb. 27, and four separate dates with Pepperdine, two of which will be played at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, March 1 and March 30.
Key series to watch this season: March 28-30 vs. Cal State Northridge
April 18-20 vs. USC
May 2-4 vs. Cal State Fullerton
May 16-18 vs. UC Riverside.
