Santa Barbara, Calif.- On Monday, the Gauchos were divided into two squads to take part in their annual Blue-Gold scrimmages. Gaucho junior shortstop Greg Powers led the Gold team with two hits and two RBI as the Gold team defeated the Blue team in the first game of the Fall Baseball Intrasquads, 7-2.
The Blue team struck first on a Taylor Vogt single up the middle to plate David Licht, however it would be the Blue teams only lead of the game, as the Gold squad would score six runs in the next three innings. Sophomore outfielder C.J. Cook gave the Gold team a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer in the top of the second inning. The Gold team tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning behind a two-run triple by Powers and RBI groundout by Bill Rowe.
The Red team rallied for one more run in the seventh inning until Jared Endrosolan struck out Vogt and freshman Matt Emerick to end the game. Sean Thompson picked up the win for the Gold team allowing two hits in four innings of work. Gaucho ace Matt Vasquez suffered the loss, but looked dominant recording five strikeouts in four innings. Walk-on Siegal continued to have an impressive fall, posting two shutout innings.
Due to the recent reconstruction of the Gaucho infield, the Fall Baseball Intrasquads will resume at the baseball fields located behind Home Depot. The series continues Wednesday, November 20, at 2:15 p.m. PDT.
