Balanced Attack Leads 5-0 U.S. Past Israel, Johnson Scores Four
In his third start at the World University Games, UC Santa Barbara's Orlando Johnson scored four points as Team USA used a balanced attack to remain unbeaten with a 94-84 win over Israel on Thursday.
Johnson attempted just three shots in his 19 minutes of action and made a pair. He also had two rebounds and a pair of assists. The American team, which finished pool play with a perfect 5-0 record, was led by JaMychal Green who tallied 16 points and had seven rebounds.
The winners of Group D, the U.S. has now reached the medal round. Also reaching the medal quarterfinals were Group C's No. 1 seed Russia (5-0), the No. 2 seed out of Group D, Finland (2-3). The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds from Group A and Group B. The U.S. will play Lithuania (4-1) on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 3:00 a.m. (PDT).
UCSB's Greg Somogyi scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked one shot in Hungary's 77-73 loss to South Korea. Somogyi, who has been a regular starter for the Hungarian squad, played just over 20 minutes as his team dropped to 0-5. They, however, will continue to play as all spots in the tournament ar played out. The schedule should be known on Friday.
