Alan Williams, Kyle Boswell Earn Big West Honors
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore forward Alan Williams was named First Team All-Big West and junior Kyle Boswell was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year as well as Honorable Mention All-Big West, the league announced Monday.
Williams finished the regular season averaging 17.6 points and a league-leading 10.7 rebounds per game. In Big West play, he upped those numbers to 19.2 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Williams has produced 15 double-doubles in his 27 games this season, including three in a row to end the season. Williams' 15 double-doubles are the most by a Gaucho since the 1989-90 season.
"Al is very deserving of being a first team all-league player," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "He has been consistent and outstanding all year. Al has had to put up with a lot of double and triple-teaming and he has handled it very well. He's also had to fight through some injuries and has really done a great job dealing with that too."
Boswell came off the bench in all but nine contests this season, averaging 13.2 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Entering the Big West Tournament, he has made 77 three-pointers in his 28 games, the fourth most in the school history and a total that ranks him second in the Big West. Boswell made 42.1% of his three-pointers overall but in Big West games, he averaged 14.1 points and shot 43.5% from three-point territory.
"Kyle has really handled his role coming off the bench incredibly well," Coach Williams said. "He is actually very comfortable with it and we needed him to do it to give us a different look. As a team, we depend on his energy and productivity and he's given those things to us in a big way."
The Gauchos will open Big West Tournament play against Pacific at noon on Thursday at Honda Center in Anaheim. UCSB is the seventh seed and has a three-game winning streak, its longest of the season. The Tigers are seeded second and have won four games in succession.
