In 2012-13, Taran Brown had one of the finest all-around freshman seasons in UCSB basketball history.
Brown, who sat out the 2011-12 season as a redshirt, did a little of everything for the Gauchos last season. He was third on the team in scoring (11.1 points per game), second in rebounding (5.3 per game), second in steals (26), second in blocked shots (31) and second in three-point baskets (58). In fact, Brown's 58 three-pointers are the most ever by a UCSB freshman and his 343 total points rank second all-time.
Brown made as many as six three-point baskets in a game and he made three or more 10 times. He posted a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds in a win over The Master's College and his season record for three-pointer by a freshman would probably be even more impressive if he hadn't been forced to wear a mask for the final five games after he broke his nose before a Feb. 28 game at Hawaii.
In his first season of action, Brown's versatility was matched by his durability. He was one of four players on the team to play in all 31 games and he had the most starts of any Gaucho player with 29. The wiry native of Gillette, Wyo. also played a team-high 931 total minutes, logging 16 or more in every game.
Brown and the rest of the UCSB men's basketball team will tip-off the 2013-14 season on Sunday, Nov. 3 when they host Cal State East Bay in an exhibition game that will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
Great season ticket packages are available for the Gauchos. The non-conference schedule includes Cal, which will be making its first appearance in Santa Barbara since it helped christen the Thunderdome in 1979, as well as old rival Utah State and 2013 NCAA Tournament participant South Dakota State.
