SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara's Alan Williams has been invited to participate in the prestigious Nike Big Man Skills Academy at Kean University in Union, N.J., from June 23-25.
Williams was invited to the camp on the heels of a junior season in which he was named 2014 Big West Player of the Year and Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American. He averaged 21.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game as a junior, leading the Big West Conference in both categories and the entire nation in rebounding.
"I'm very excited and honored to have been invited and I'm really looking forward to representing UCSB and the Big West at this camp," Williams said. "It should be a lot of fun and an amazing opportunity to improve my game."
The Phoenix native led UCSB to a 21-9 record in 2013-14. In addition to his scoring and rebounding exploits, Williams averaged 2.4 blocked shots and 1.2 steals per game. In a late-November game against South Dakota State, he tied school records for points with 39 and blocked shots with eight. He also became the first Gaucho in 25 years to record a 20-20 in a game when he had 27 points and 20 rebounds in a win against UC Davis and he was a six-time Big West Player of the Week, a new record.
"There is no big man more deserving of an invitation to the Big Man Academy," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "Al has worked very hard to become one of the best low post players in the country and this will give him an opportunity to get even better."
Invitations to the Nike Elite Basketball Big Man Skills Academy were extended to the top 10 college big men and top 10 to 25 high school big men.
Williams becomes the second Gaucho in the last four years to earn an invitation to a Nike Skills Camp, joining Orlando Johnson who attended one in 2011.
