SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - A perfect shooting night from freshman reserve Josh Davis helped UC Santa Barbara open Big West Conference play with a 65-49 victory over UC Riverside Thursday night.
The Gauchos (4-7, 1-0 ) had lost five straight road games and were playing their first regular-season home game since beating Southern California on Dec. 3. UC Riverside (1-6, 0-1) has lost four in a row.
Davis came off the bench to rally UCSB from a 17-10 deficit. He scored eight points, which included a pair of 3-pointers, during a 13-0 run which put the Gauchos ahead for good, 27-20. Davis shot 5-for-5 on the night and finished with 14 points.
UCSB, with leading scorer Branduinn Fullove sidelined with a groin injury, was led by Mark Hull with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Hull had 11 points after halftime to help the Gauchos extend a 32-35 lead.
Riverside, led by Kevin Butler's 13 points and four assists, rallied to within six, 46-40, with 10:15 left. But a three-point play by Hull sealed the win for the Gauchos.
