SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Chris Devine scored 20 points and made a pair of free throws with 17.6 seconds left to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 77-74 victory over Long Beach State.
The Gauchos (6-7, 1-2 Big West Conference) made 10 of 14 free throws in the last 2:39 to hold off the 49ers, who were rallying from a seven-point deficit.
Jibril Hodges led Long Beach State (5-7, 0-1) with 19 points, shooting 5-for-13 from the 3-point line. His driving basket with 8.7 seconds left trimmed UCSB's lead to a point, but freshman Tom Garlep made the Gauchos' last two free throws with 7.3 remaining and Hodges' 30-footer to tie it banged off the rim in the final second.
The 49ers' Aaron Nixon got six of his 12 points in the final 37 seconds, and teammate Shawn Hawkins also scored 12 with seven rebounds.
The Gauchos have won seven straight home games, including all six this season.
