SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Cecil Brown scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half to lead UC Santa Barbara past UC Irvine 71-62 for its fourth-straight win Thursday night.
The victory kept the Gauchos (15-6, 6-2 Big West) a half-game behind first-place Long Beach, which will play at Santa Barbara on Saturday.
The Gauchos set the pace for the first half, posting a 36-28 lead at halftime. After the break, the Anteaters (11-14, 5-6) battled back, and Patrick Sanders used a pair of free throws to bring Irvine within a point, 55-54, with 4:47 left in the game.
But then Brown scored 14 points, including a four-point play with 1:48 to go. Santa Barbara shot 46.8 percent for the game while holding the Anteaters to 39.6 percent.
Sanders led Irvine with 19 points.
