UC Santa Barbara Surges Past Long Beach State, 81-78

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Cecil Brown scored 23 points and Chris Devine had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead UC Santa Barbara to an 81-78 victory over Long Beach State Saturday.

Trailing 76-70 with 3:01 remaining, the Gauchos (10-11, 3-6 Big West Conference) went on an 11-2 run to win their third straight game and win at Long Beach State (11-11, 6-5) for the nfirst time since the 2001 season.

Brown shot 7-of-14 and hit a key 3-pointer with 1:23 left. Moments later he made a free throw with 16 seconds remaining to give Santa Barbara 79-76 lead.

Michael Chambers hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to increase the Gauchos' lead to 81-78.

Kevin Houston's 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark for Long Beach State.

Jibril Hodges tied a career-high with six 3-pointers and scored 24 points for the 49ers, and Houston scored 14 points.

The 49ers erased a nine point second-half deficit to take a 76-70 lead, but did not make a basket in the final 4:52 of the game.
