Fullove Scores Career-High 29 As Men's Basketball Rallies Past Cal Poly, 69-66

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Branduinn Fullove scored a career-high 29 points and UC Santa Barbara outscored Cal Poly 17-5 in the last 5:26 on Saturday night as the Gauchos defeated the Mustangs, 69-66.

Cal Poly's David Henry, who finished with a team-high 22 points, hit a pair of free throws with 5:47 remaining to give the Mustangs a 61-52 lead. Fullove, however, capped an 11-2 run with 2:52 left, scoring on a lay-up and then converting the free throw after he was fouled by Jason Allen. The free throw tied the score at 63-63.

After a series of misses, Nick Jones broke the tie with an 18-footer from near the top of the key with 1:29 to go. The Mustangs responded when center Varnie Dennis hit an eight-footer in middle of the key. He was fouled by Jones and made the free throw, giving Cal Poly a 66-63 lead.

After a timeout, the Jones missed a shot with 15 seconds remaining in the game. The Mustangs knocked the ball out of bounds with 13 seconds to go. UCSB worked the ball to Mark Hull who missed a driving lay-up. Hull, however, was fouled by guard Steve Geary and hit a pair of free throws to give the Gauchos a 67-66 edge.

Following Hull's free throws, Cal Poly opted not to call a timeout. The worked the ball to Allen who came off of a Dennis pick in the lane. Allen, however, was called for a charge when he ran over Jones. Jones missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Mustangs rebounded and called timeout, but a length of the court pass went long and UCSB guard Jacoby Atako chased it down in the corner. Atako was fouled with 0:00.8 left and he hit a pair of free throws to make it 69-66 Gauchos.

The Mustangs had one last chance, but Dennis' three-point attempted rimmed out at the buzzer.

In addition to Fullove's 29 points, Jones added 15 for UCSB. Hull, the Gauchos' leading scorer, made just 1-of-11 from the field, but he did hit 6-of-8 free throws to finish with eight points. In addition to Henry's 22 point effort, Brandon Beason had 13 and Dennis added 11 for Cal Poly.

The win moves UCSB into third-place all alone in the Big West. The Gauchos, who have won three games in a row, are now 15-8 overall and 9-5 in league. Cal Poly drops to 14-8 overall and 8-6 in the Big West.

UCSB returns to the court on Thursday, February 21 when they travel to Long Beach State for a 7:30 p.m. game.
