SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Jamaal Brown and Bobby Brown each scored 14 points, and Ralphy Holmes added 12 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists, to lead visiting Cal State Fullerton past UC Santa Barbara, 66-57 on Thursday night.
The Titans (16-8 overall, 10-5 in the Big West) have now won three consecutive games and eight of their past nine. UCSB (9-15 overall, 6-9 in the Big West) have dropped four of their last five.
Fullerton led by four at halftime, but Gaucho guard Chrismen Oliver made a three-point basket to open the scoring in the second half, cutting the Titan lead to one, 29-28. After Holmes committed a foul while going for an offensive rebound, UCSB took a 30-29 lead on a step-through lay-up by Josh Davis.
Titan forward Yaphett King was fouled in the act of shooting by Glenn Turner. King made one of the two free throws to tie the score at 30-30 with 18:08 left. After a Fullerton defensive stop, Jermaine Harper took a feed from Holmes in the left corner and made a three-point basket to give the Titans a 33-30 lead. UCSB's Alex Harris cut the lead to 33-32 with a lay-up, his only basket of the night, but Holmes responded with a three-point basket to up the advantage to four, 36-32. Oliver scored on a driving lay-up to make it 36-34 with 16:15 to go in the game, but Holmes struck again with a 15-footer and then after a defensive stop, King made a sweeping jump-hook to give Fullerton a 40-34 edge.
The Gauchos and Titans traded baskets, but UCSB rallied, edging to within 47-46 with 12:14 to go when Davis made a short jumper and was fouled. He made the free throw. Following an offensive foul by King, Harris was fouled on a drive to the basket. He made one of two free throws to tie the score at 47-47 with 11:21 to go, but that's when the Titans took over.
Fullerton outscored UCSB 11-0 over the next four minutes to take a commanding 58-47 lead with 7:00 left in the game. Bobby Brown had five points during the run, including a long three-pointer from straight-away, and Jamaal Brown had four points. Holmes scored the other two on a pair of free throws when he was fouled attempting a shot after an offensive rebound.
The Gauchos got as close as four at 58-54 with 4:22 left, but they could not convert their free throws, making just 7-of-13 in the second half, and 12-of-21 overall, and that spelled their doom.
UCSB was paced by walk-on freshman Derek Rasp who had a game-high 15 points. Oliver and Joe See each added 10 for the Gauchos. Fullerton easily won the battle of the boards, 42-33, and the Titans had 13 offensive rebounds. UCSB did limit the Titans to just 4-of-19 from three-point range, 21.1%.
Santa Barbara returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts UC Riverside. The game, which will tip-off at 4:00 p.m. to accommodate Fox Sports, will be the Gauchos final home game of the 2004-05 season.
