STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -Alex Harris scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as UC Santa Barbara beat Northwestern State 92-71 on Friday night in the first round of the Basketball Travelers Classic.

Ivan Elliott scored 17 points as the Gauchos won their fifth consecutive season opener. Chris Devine added 13 points.

Damon Jones made all five of his 3-point tries in the first half and finished with 17 points for the Demons, who played the earliest opener - by one day - in school history. Trey Gilder had 13 points.

Harris, the defending Big West scoring champion, matched his fourth-best scoring effort.

Northwestern State played without centers Jerry Moody (academic probation) and Demetrius Bell (who is playing football for the Demons). Forward Devin White missed the game because of breaking a team rule.

The Gauchos, favored to win the Big West title, led for all but the first four minutes of the contest. The Demons were within nine points until the final five minutes.

The Gauchos led at halftime, 40-38.
