Gauchos Go Cold in Second Half, Drop 74-72 Exhibition Decision to Ratiopharm Ulm

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Former Pacific star Peter Heizer scored a team-high 18 points to lead Ratiopharm Ulm to a 74-72 come-from-behind win over UC Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome on Wednesday night.

The Gauchos, who led by as many as 13 points in the first half, went cold in the second half, shooting just 36.4%. Ratiopharm Ulm, which made 11 three-pointers in the game, narrowed the halftime gap to 42-41. The German club took its first lead at 52-51 and led by as many as six points at 72-66. UCSB, however, used a pair of free throws by guard Jacoby Atako, a lay-up by guard Nick Jones and two free throws by guard Joe See with 0:24 to tie the score at 72-72.

Ratiopharm Ulm's Ed Williams scored on a follow with 0:06 remaining to help his team reclaim the lead at 74-72. UCSB brought the ball up court quickly and after a pass was deflected out of bounds, the Gauchos called a timeout. Out of the timeout, Santa Barbara got the ball to Jones in the corner. The senior from Oxnard, Calif., missed a three-point attempt, collected his own rebound and then missed about a 12-footer as the buzzer sounded to end the game.

The Gauchos played the final 29 minutes without senior guard Branduinn Fullove. Fullove injured his left ankle midway through the first half when he chased down a Ratiopharm Ulm player, fouled him and then came down awkwardly. He did not return to the game. In addition, sophomore guard Cecil Brown missed the game with an foot injury of his own and another sophomore guard, Josh Davis may still redshirt the season and also did not play.

Jones and sophomore forward Cameron Goettsche each scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Gauchos. Goettsche also had a game-high ten rebounds. Atako had 13 points and five assists. In addition to Heizer's 18 points, Kai-Uwe Kranz scored 15 points, making 5-of-6 shots from beyond the three-point arc. Williams, who scored the game-winner for Ratiopharm Ulm added 14 points.

The loss was UCSB's final exhibition game. The Gauchos open the regular season on Friday, November 21 when they travel to Honolulu for a 9:00 p.m. (PST) game against Hawaii.
