Gauchos Slip Past Hawaii, 57-51

HONOLULU (AP) - Casey Cook scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Jacoby Atako and Cecil Brown each added 13 points as UC Santa Barbara defeated Hawaii 57-51 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Gauchos scored 10 straight points over a five-minute span in the second half to pull away from the Rainbow Warriors.
Trailing 42-37 midway through the second half, Hawaii's largest lead of the half, the Gauchos forced two turnovers to close the deficit to 42-41. After a Phil Martin basket, the Gauchos tied the game at 44 on Atako's three-point play with 7:49 remaining.
Hawaii turned the ball over on the following possession, leading to one of Joe See's two 3-pointers that put the Gauchos up 47-44, giving them the lead for good.
Jason Carter's two free throws broke the Hawaii drought with less than three minutes left.
Hawaii led 25-20 at halftime after a scoring seven straight points to close out the first half.
UCSB led 7-2 four minutes into the game after the Rainbow Warriors missed their first five shots. A layup by Martin tied the game at seven, one of four ties in the first half.
Martin led Hawaii with 12 points. Teammate Julian Sensley added 10.
The Gauchos played without seniors Branduinn Fullove, the 2003 Big West Conference Player of the Year, and Nick Jones. Fullove suffered an ankle injury in an exhibition game on Nov. 12. Jones is serving an eight-game suspension for participating in an uncertified summer league in Mexico.
