RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Branduinn Fullove had 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting and helped UC Santa Barbara spoil UC Riverside's debut in the Big West Conference with a 68-52 victory Thursday night.
Riverside's Highlanders (2-6, 0-1 Big West), playing their first-ever conference game after a two-year provisional status required of new Division I schools, trailed the Gauchos (6-2, 1-0 Big West) all the way after UCR's John Galbreath made a jumper to tie it 6-6 with 3:30 played.
The Gauchos (6-2, 1-0) used a 7-0 run with 10:13 left in the first half to take their largest lead of the half, 24-10. They extended the lead several times to 16 points, the latest at 63-47 with 4:28 left on a layup by Nick Jones.
Riverside came back, using a 9-0 run capped by a free throw by Vili Morton, to cut the lead to seven. On the next possession, the Gauchos' Jacoby Atako made one of two free throws, then UCSB got a layup from Mark Hull after a missed jumper by Morton to seal the win.
Jason Perkins of UCR led all scorers with 19 points.
Riverside's Morton had his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
