SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior guard Alex Harris was named Big West Player of the Week after leading UC Santa Barbara to conference wins over Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside last weekend, it was announced Tuesday.
Harris, who leads the Big West in scoring average at 21.4 points per game, averaged 24.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game as the Gauchos went 2-0 to open league-play.
In the Dec. 28 win over UC Riverside, the Alameda, Calif., native scored a career-high 32 points and had six rebounds. His 32 points were 44.0% of the team's total in the 73-65 victory. On Dec. 30, in a showdown of two of the Big West's hottest teams, Harris had 16 points, a season-high nine rebounds, three assists and two steals as UCSB ended Cal State Fullerton's five-game winning streak, 84-76.
"Alex has played so well this year and it is good to see him recognized for that," said Gaucho head coach Bob Williams. "He had a good weekend and is a major reason that we are 2-0 in league."
In addition to averaging 21.4 points per game, Harris is averaging 4.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He not only leads the league in scoring, but also in three-point field goal percentage at 47.7%. Harris also ranks fourth in three-pointers made per game (2.38 per game) and free throw percentage (81.3%) and sixth in field goal percentage (52.8%).
The award marked the second time this season that Harris has been named Player of the Week. He was also honored after scoring 25 points in UCSB's season-opening win over San Jose State. After receiving just two Players of the Week the last two seasons combined, Gauchos have earned the accolade three times this season. UCSB, 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big West, will travel to Long Beach State and UC Irvine for conference games this weekend. The Gauchos take-on the league-favorite 49ers on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Pyramid.
