Gaucho Basketball to Honor Local 'Mathletes' at Saturday Game Against Cal State Northridge

Jan. 3, 2008

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On Saturday, Jan. 5, the UC Santa Barbara Men's Basketball team will honor its newest teammates: 150 third grade students from the Goleta community. These students have completed the UCSB Men's Basketball Mathlete Program and will be recognized for their accomplishments at the game on Saturday night. The goal of the program is to emphasize the importance of education and its relevance in every day life.

Throughout the fall pairs of athletes visited third grade classrooms to teach math lessons. The athletes discussed how they use the math skills they learned in third grade to do what they love: play basketball. After conducting a math lesson, the students completed a sports related math exercise on their own, which was then reviewed and corrected by the athletes. The Gauchos also set aside some time to answer any questions and to give the students a chance to get to know them on a more personal level.

Since its start last year, the program has successfully grown to include seven third grade classes throughout the Goleta community, and is generously sponsored by Presto Pasta.

The Gauchos will take on the Cal State Northridge Matadors this Saturday, January 5 at 7 pm. The UCSB Mathletes will be recognized on the court at halftime. Come support UCSB Men's Basketball and the newest additions to the UCSB Gauchos.
