SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Former UC Santa Barbara basketball great Carrick DeHart was introduced as a "Legend of the Dome" in a ceremony at halftime of the Gauchos' game against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night.
DeHart played at UCSB from 1986-1990. In 1986-87, he was named Big West Freshman of the Year and the following three seasons he was named All-Big West. As a senior in 1989-90, he earned All-American honors as he helped lead the Gauchos to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In fact, he was the leading scorer with 23 points in their second round game against Big Ten champion Michigan State. In all, UCSB advanced to postseason in each of DeHart's final three seasons, going to the 1988 NCAA Tournament and the 1989 National Invitation Tournament as well as the 1990 NCAA Tournament.
Perhaps the game that epitomizes this "Legend of the Dome" the most came near the end of the 1989-90 season. With the Gauchos preparing to play top-ranked UNLV, DeHart severely sprained an ankle the day before the game. Although not expected to play, he received constant treatment over the next day in hopes that he might be able to see some playing time in the nationally televised game.
With his ankle tightly taped - duct tape as it were - not only did he play, he scored a game-high 24 points as UCSB defeated the eventual National Champion Runnin' Rebels, 78-70. It was UNLV's only loss over a stretch of 55 games.
DeHart scored 1,687 points in his career, a record that stood for 18 years. He still ranks second on UCSB's all-time scoring list and overall he ranks in the top-10 all-time in 10 statistical categories.
"This is such a great honor," DeHart said after the ceremony. "My times here were some of the greatest years of my life. We did a lot of special things and I have such great memories."
DeHart is the second of five "Legends of the Dome" to be introduced. In the fall, women's volleyball player Roberta Gehlke was honored. A second men's basketball legend will be announced prior to the Gauchos' Feb. 13 game against Long Beach State. There will also be two women's basketball legends announced in February, one prior to the Feb. 11 game against UC Riverside and the other before a Feb. 27 game against Cal Poly.
Special "Legends Packs" of tickets are available for each of the Legends games. The Pack includes four tickets, four hot dogs, and four sodas for $40.
