SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore guard Orlando Johnson has been named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after scoring a career-high 27 points and making a pivotal 3-point basket as the Gauchos beat Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 23, 85-80 in overtime.
Johnson, who is leading UCSB in both scoring (17.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg) also had five rebounds, one assist, and one steal to go with his career-high 27 points. Most importantly, however, it was his long 3-point basket with 3.4 seconds to play in regulation that tied the score at 72-72 and sent the game into overtime, allowing the Gauchos to seize the win in the extra session.
The big 3-pointer was the second game-decider that Johnson has made this season. On Jan. 4, he drained a triple inside the final 20 seconds to help UCSB overcome a 13-point deficit and post a road win at UC Riverside.
A Seaside, Calif., native, Johnson has scored in double-figures in all 17 games this season, the longest such streak since Alex Harris scored 10 or more in 21 straight in 2006-07.
Johnson and the Gauchos, who are 5-2 in the Big West, will host Cal Poly, also 5-2 in league, in an important game on Thursday, Jan. 28. In addition to the game being a vital league contest between teams battling for the top spot, it is a renewal of the Blue-Green Rivalry Series for Sustainability.
