SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's basketball team will be accepting new and used shoes during the Wednesday, Mar. 3 game to donate to Soles4Souls Inc. in an effort to help out the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. This is part of the Gauchos Give community outreach program.
The game between UCSB and UC Irvine will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. A Gaucho win would give them the 2010 Big West regular season title.
A bin will be set up at the front entrance of the Thunderdome for fans to donate shoes for the cause. UCSB's coaches and players will also donate shoes directly to the cause. The Gaucho coaching staff will wear sneakers on the sidelines on Wednesday to bring awareness to the cause.
For anyone who cannot bring a donation to Wednesday's game, the bin to collect shoes will be placed inside the Intercollegiate Athletics building's Hall of Champions during the week before sending the shoes to Soles4Souls.
Soles4Souls accepts all types of shoes: athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip-flops - just as long as they are new or gently worn.
Every 23 seconds, Soles4Souls Inc. gives away another pair of shoes to someone in need. The shoe charity has earned glowing endorsements from Hollywood stars and professional athletes, but the people who truly make the non-profit organization effective are those who partner with Soles4Souls in its mission of changing the world one pair at a time.
