SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Orlando Johnson, who led UC Santa Barbara to its second straight Big West Tournament championship and another NCAA Tournament berth, has been selected the UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week.
Johnson had one of the finest Big West Tournaments ever as he he averaged 27.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists. He also made 12-of-18 three-point baskets in the three games. The fifth-seeded Gauchos defeated No. 4 Pacific, No. 3 Cal State Northridge and No. 1 Long Beach State on consecutive days to claim the title.
In the tournament opener against Pacific, Johnson broke UCSB's record for points in a game at the Big West Tournament with 32. In the win over Cal State Northridge, he had 30 more and hit all five of his three-point attempts, also a school record. In the championship game against the 49ers, which had won 11 straight games, Johnson scored 23, including 18 in the decisive second half.
The Gauchos play the University of Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night in Tampa, Fla. Tip-off time for the game, which can be heard on AM 1290 KZSB and seen on TBS, will be 3:50 (PDT).
