UCSB Signs Point Guard Justin Joyner to National Letter of Intent
April 19, 2006
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Justin Joyner - the starting point guard for Concord De La Salle High School's California State Division I championship team - has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UC Santa Barbara, head coach Bob Williams announced Wednesday.
Joyner, who made a pair of free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining in the state title game to help secure a 43-40 win, finished the season averaging 9.4 points, 5.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. He also paced De La Salle in three-point baskets and had a better than 4-to-1 assist to turnover ratio.
"Justin is a great pick-up for our program," Williams said. "He has winning habits and understands what it is to play for the prize. He comes from a great high school program and any time you get a player who played for [De La Salle head coach] Frank Allocco, you've done okay."
After leading De La Salle to the State Championship, a 32-1 overall record and a No. 3 national ranking, Joyner was named Player of the Year in the Bay Valley Athletic League. Additionally, he was selected to the Division I All-State Team by CalHiSports.com, First Team All-East Bay by the Contra Costa Times and Second Team All-Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle.
"Justin is a great defender and he has become a very good offensive player," Williams said. "He has made himself into a very good three-point shooter. Most importantly though, he was the quarterback for a state championship team and he is a winner."
Joyner is the second player signed to a National Letter of Intent by UCSB this year. Sam Phippen, a 6-foot-9 forward from Durango (Colo.) High School signed during the early signing period in November.
