April 25, 2001
Santa Barbara, Calif. -
David Campbell, who spent last season as an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount and six seasons prior to that as the associate head coach at Kansas State, has been named an assistant at UC Santa Barbara, head coach Bob Williams announced today.
"David brings with him a wealth of great connections in the midwest and on the west coast," Williams said. "He spent six years at Kansas State and did a great job of recruiting the midwest. He was also an outstanding college post player and he will take over the duties of working with our post players. We think David can help us get the next level in the building of our program."
Prior to spending six years at Kansas State, Campbell spent six campaigns as an assistant coach at Pepperdine, where his relationship with Williams and fellow-Gaucho assistant coach Marty Wilson began.
"David and I have been close personal friends since 1988 when we first met as assistants at Pepperdine," Williams recalled. "We have looked for opportunities to work together since then and this was a perfect fit."
Before beginning his six year tenure at Pepperdine, Campbell spent one season (1987-88) as an assistant at Weber State. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, St. Mary's, where he spent six seasons from 1981 to 1987. Campbell spent four years (1976-80) as a player at St. Mary's, where, in 1980, he was named All-West Coast Conference after helping guide the Gaels to the WCC Championship.
"I am very excited to get started at UC Santa Barbara," Campbell said. "This is a great opportunity for me. My past relationships with Bob (Williams) and Marty (Wilson) are a real plus and I am looking forward to helping the Gauchos win a Big West Championship."
In addition to spending two seasons on the same staff Pepperdine staff as Williams, Campbell was an assistant in Wilson's final season as a player for the Waves. The duo then coached together from 1990 until 1994, when Campbell departed for his stint at Kansas State.
Campbell graduated from St. Mary's in 1980 with his BA in Business Administration.
