SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Jonathan "Jono" Metzger-Jones, the Director of Basketball Operations at Cal State Fullerton in 2006-07 and a former guard at the University of the Pacific, has been named Director of Basketball Operations at UC Santa Barbara, head coach Bob Williams announced Thursday. Metzger-Jones replaces Joe Nagy who accepted an assistant coaching position Centenary College.
"I think that Jono is an outstanding addition to our staff," Williams said. "He has a great personality and fits perfectly, not only with the coaching staff but the players as well. He also played for and worked with coaches who I respect a great deal and that background means a great deal to me."
Metzger-Jones spent the last year at Cal State Fullerton working under head coach Bob Burton. In his position at Fullerton, he was in charge of the program's film exchange and team managers. He also assisted in scouting reports and game preparation, recruiting coordination and player visits, team travel, player academic supervision and facility scheduling. Additionally, he acted as the Director of the Bob Burton Summer Basketball Camp and was the co-director of the team camp.
Metzger-Jones' first collegiate basketball experience also came under Burton, for whom he played at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., from 1997-2000. In his final season at West Valley, he was the team's Most Valuable Player and Team Captain. In Metzger-Jones' two seasons, the program went 55-10.
Following his stint at West Valley, the native of Oakland, Calif., moved on to the University of the Pacific where he played for two years for head coach Bob Thomason. In his two seasons, the Tigers went 38-22. As a senior in 2001-02, Metzger-Jones averaged 6.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He also tied for the team-lead with 48 three-point baskets and paced the squad in free throw percentage at 85.7%.
After his career at Pacific, Metzger-Jones spent time playing for several professional teams in Europe. He played for Poste Italiane in the Treviso Italian Professional Summer League, Lugano in the Swiss LNBA, Horsens IC in the Danish Basketligaen and Aanekoski Huima in the Finland Sparliga. From 2000-07, he was also a Site Director/Counselor for the Golden State Warriors Youth Basketball Camps.
"I am very excited to be here," Metzger-Jones began. "This is a great school and a great area. Starting at the top with Coach Williams, there are very good people in this program. Dan Yoshikawa (UCSB assistant coach) is a good friend of mine and I've known Alex (Harris) and Ivan (Elliott) for a long time, it will be good to work with them. At Cal State Fullerton, with Coach Burton, I was able to get my foot in the door and we both felt this would be a good opportunity for me to take the next step. I have great respect for Coach Williams and appreciate the opportunity. Everything fits and I am looking forward to the experience."
Metzger-Jones graduated from Pacific in 2002 with a B.S. in business administration. He also graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, the same school that produced former Gaucho All-American Brian Shaw.
The addition of Metzger-Jones finalizes the Gauchos' coaching staff for the 2007-08 season. In April, Williams hired Yoshikawa, who played for him at UC Davis and for Burton at West Valley. Returnees David Campbell and Matt Stock comprise the remainder of the staff.
