SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Big West Conference has unveiled its broadcast television package for the 2005-06 basketball season, with UC Santa Barbara's teams featured four times - and potentially seven - during the upcoming campaign.
The Gaucho men will have two home contests televised, against Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Net West 2 and vs. Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. via Southern California over-the-air station KVMD. UCSB's Thursday, Feb. 9 game at UC Irvine will also be broadcast on KVMD, while Santa Barbara has three other potential television appearances late in the regular season.
On Feb. 18 the Gauchos will play a to-be-determined non-conference opponent as part of ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday. For the fourth consecutive year, the Big West will be involved with this special event, however this will be the first in which all eight conference members will be entered into the pool of candidates for televised games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.
Another new element being utilized for the first time in 2005-06 is a flexible schedule during the final week of the regular season that will allow the Big West and its TV partners to select the most compelling match-ups just a few weeks in advance. UCSB's Thursday, March 2 game at Pacific and Saturday, March 4 contest at Cal State Northridge both have the potential to air on KVMD and FSNW2, respectively.
The league's television package will culminate March 9-11 at the 31st Annual Big West Basketball Tournament in Anaheim, Calif. The men's quarterfinals and semifinals - four games total - will be broadcast live on March 9 and 10, respectively, by KVMD with the championship game set to air on Saturday, March 11 at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN.
Meanwhile, the 10-time defending Big West champion UCSB women's basketball team will make history this season as the Gauchos' Feb. 18 home game against longtime league rival Long Beach State will airs live on Fox Sports West Net 2 at 5:00 p.m. It marks the first time a regular season women's contest will be televised regionally from the Thunderdome.
The Gaucho women have another opportunity for TV exposure when the Big West championship game airs live on FSNW2 on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m. Santa Barbara has won the league tourney title in each of the past nine years.
Both UCSB teams begin their respective 2005-06 campaigns with early November exhibition contests in the Thunderdome. The Gaucho men open with a Thursday, Nov. 3 game against UC San Diego, while the women play Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Nov. 6.
