Nov. 1, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara senior guard Alex Harris has been named to the 25-man collegeinsider.com Preseason Mid-Major All-America Team, it was announced Wednesday. Previously, he was named Second Team Preseason Mid-Major All-American by collegehoops.net.
Harris, a First Team All-Big West choice in 2006-07 and a Preseason All-Big West selection this year, won the league's scoring title at 21.1 points per game as a junior. He is the top returning player on a UCSB team that was picked by both the coaches and media to win the Big West regular season title this season. In addition to his 21.1 points per game, the 6-foot-6 Alameda, Calif., native averaged career-highs of 4.8 rebounds and 2.1. He made 71 three-point baskets and hit 45.8% of his shots from behind the three-point arc.
"Alex is very deserving of every honor he receives," said Gaucho coach Bob Williams. "The thing that is most important and what I am most impressed with though, is how focused he is on the team and how best he can help this team achieve its goals."
The collegeinsider.com Preseason Mid-Major All-America Team is made up of 25 players, but is not broken down into teams. The only other member of the team to hail from a West Coast school is Diamon Simpson of St. Mary's College.
Harris and his UCSB teammates are ranked 20th in the collegeinsider.com preseason mid-major poll. The Gauchos will open exhibition play on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The regular season will tip-off on Friday, Nov. 9, when they travel north to take part in the Basketball Travelers Classic at Stanford. UCSB will open against Northwestern State in its first game before taking on Harvard and Stanford on Saturday and Sunday. The home opener against Cal Poly Pomona is slated for Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m.
