SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara senior guard Nick Jones has been suspended eight regular season games against NCAA competition for playing eight games in an uncertified league in Mexico during the summer of 2003, the NCAA announced today.
Jones will miss the first eight regular season games against NCAA opponents. It is yet to be determined if he can play in the Gauchos' December 10 game against Westmont College, an NAIA opponent. He will miss games against Hawaii, Montana, Pepperdine, San Diego, UCLA, Kansas, Alabama State either St. Mary's or Southeastern Missouri, UCSB's day-two opponent in the Montana Holiday Classic.
As a junior, Jones averaged 12.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 49.5% overall and 41.4% from three-point range. He was one of just two UCSB players to play in and start all 32 games during the 2002-03 campaign and he was the co-winner of the Big West Hustle Award and an honorable mention all-league choice. In 2001-02, as a sophomore, Jones was selected the Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the Gauchos to their first-ever league tournament crown and an NCAA Tournament bid.
