Sophomore guard James Powell stepped up when needed and poured in a career-high 24 points to help lead the Gauchos to a 75-56 win over Cal Poly Pomona last week at The Thunderdome.
With senior guard Alex Harris, the team's leading scorer, out with a thumb injury, the Gauchos were in need of someone to fill the gap. Powell answered the call, going 8-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point line. Powell also drained all four of his free throws to account for the career-best 24.
Against the Broncos, he missed his first shot, a three-point attempt, and then made four of his next six, including three of four from three-point range.
Powell, who hails from Glendora, also had a rebound and an assist in 31 minutes against Cal Poly Pomona.
