Today's Game: UC Santa Barbara v. Jacksonville State

Nov. 23, 2002

Today the Gauchos battle Jacksonville State in the second round of the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

UCSB takes on the Gamecocks in a 3:00 p.m. game in Carlson Arena at University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The game will be broadcast on KEYT 1250 AM.

UCSB Probable Starting Lineup:
Santa Barbara will likely go with the same starting five that lost to Weber State in last night's first-round game. Jacoby Atako will run the point and he'll be joined in the backcourt by Branduinn Fullove and Nick Jones. Last night's leading scorer with 23 points, Mark Hull, will play forward and Bryan Whitehead will be on the other block.

Jacksonville State Probable Starting Lineup: The Gamecocks, who are coming off a first round loss to Ball State, will start four guards. Emerson Brown, Cornelis Richardson, James Denson and Jay Heard all play beyond the arc while Omar Bartlett will man the middle. The tallest of the guards starting for the Gamecocks Jay Heard, is only 6-foot 3.

Scouting the Gamecocks:
In last night's affair, the Gamecocks were led by Omar Bartlett who scored 21 points on 9 for 12 shooting. Jay Heard dropped in 12 points himself and hit the team's only three-point basket. The Gamecocks are a small team, they start four guards and appear to match-up well with the Gauchos outside.

Scouting the Gauchos:
Santa Barbara, who was picked to win the Big West this season, is coming off a loss to Weber State in the first round of the tournament. Mark Hull led the Gauchos with 23 points on 9 of 16 shooting. He was three for six behind the three-point line and also grabbed eight rebounds. Nick Jones had a hot hand netting 20 points and grabbing seven boards as well. Branduinn Fullove, in his first game this season was 1 for 8 from the field finishing with just nine points. He did go to the free throw line five times, drilling six of the shots.

Key Matchup:
The key match up in tonight's game will be Omar Bartlett against the Gaucho forwards. Bartlett is 6 foot 8 but he is basically the only big man that the Gamecocks have. If the Gauchos can get to Bartlett early and draw some quick fouls, they can dominate the game down low. UCSB should out rebound Jacksonville State and we should see big numbers from the Santa Barbara big men.

What to look for:
Look for the Gauchos to redeem themselves after last nights loss. The Gamecocks are short so they match-up fairly well with the Gauchos outside, but Atako, Jones, Fullove, and Hull should come out on top. Also, look for the forwards, Whitehead and Casey Cook, to play well underneath the basket. This is one of the only chances they'll have all season to play a team that is smaller then they are on the roster, so look for the big guys to take advantage.
