Gauchos Open 2012-13 Season Finishing 6th at Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara golf team had a bit of a belated start to its 2012-13 season, but the Gauchos didn't look rusty as they shot a 17-over par 881 to finish sixth at the 20-team Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif., on Tuesday.

UCSB sat in sixth-place after the first two rounds of the tournament and shot a 291 in the final round, nine shots better than its second round effort, to solidify the final standing.

Sophomore Brett Silvernail, making his first appearances for the Gauchos, was the top finisher. Silvernail bookended a second round 76 with a pair of 1-under par 71s to finish with a 2-over par 218, tying him for 15th-place.  Senior Jordan Epstein carded a 5-over par 221 to tie for 23rd at 221. Sophomore Amol Mahal was one shot behind Epstein at 6-over par 222, tying for 29th.

Two other UCSB players broke 230 in the opening tournament of the sason.  Senior Marshall Colby shot a 9-over 225 and senior Glen Scher finished at 12-over par 228.

The University of San Diego easily won the team title by shooting a 14-under par 850.  Arizona State was the only other team to tally below par, finishing nine shots back at 5-under 859.  Washington State, Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine rounded out the top-5.

Indivivdual honors at the Bill Cullum went to Jon Rahm Rodriguez of Arizona State.  Rodriguez led a group of 11 golfers who shot under par with a 12-under 204.  San Diego's Grant Forrerst (-9) and UC Irvine's Travis Russell (-7) were second and third.

The Gauchos will play their only other fall tournament on Nov. 5-7 when they travel to The Warrior Wave Princeville Intercollegiate at Makai GC in Princeville, Hawaii.
