WEST POINT, N.Y. - Glen Scher, the 2013 Big West Golfer of the Year, picked-up where he left off last season, finishing highest among five UC Santa Barbara golfers at the Stars and Stripes Invitational at West Point, N.Y. on Monday.  It was the season-opening tournament for UCSB.

Scher shot a 6-over par 213 to finish tied for seventh in the tournament played in the rain at the West Point Golf Course.  He finished eight shots off the winning pace set by Army's Marcus Plunkett who shot the only sub-par score of the tournament.  Plunkett completed his three rounds at 2-under 205.

As a team, the Gauchos finished seventh in the 10-team field with an 894.  They were eight shots behind Bucknell, which shot 886 and 16 behind Columbia. The host school, Army, won the team title with an 841, five shots ahead of Loyola University of Maryland.

The next highest UCSB finisher was Jordan Epstein, who finished tied for 22nd at 16-over par.  Brett Silvernail, who tied for the Big West Tournament title in 2013 before losing in a playoff, and Amol Mahal each shot 23-over par to tie for 38th.

The Gauchos return to the links on Oct. 21 and 22 when they play at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge at Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
