COSTA MESA, Calif. - Senior Glen Scher shot a 1-over par 214 to finish in a tie for fourth to help the UC Santa Barbara golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Anteater Invitational on Tuesday. The tournament was hosted by UC Irvine at the Mesa Verde Country Club and it was the first tourney of the winter/spring season.
In Tuesday's final round, Scher carded a 1-over par 72 to stay among the top-5. His best round was Monday's second round when he shot a 2-under par 69.
Jordan Epstein and Derek Trofimczuk each recorded 11-over par 224s to finish tied for 23rd, while Brett Silvernail shot a 12-over par 225 and tied for 27th. Hunter Robinson was the Gauchos' fifth player and he completed the 54 holes with a 13-over 226, tying for 29th.
As a team, UCSB was +29, 12 shots back of Long Beach State, which won the team title. The Gauchos were eight strokes back of Sacramento State and UC Irvine, which tied for second, and two behind Cal State Northridge, which finished fourth.
UC Irvine's Pete Fernandez won individual medalist honors with a 3-under par 210. Kyler Sauer of Northridge and Kevin Lee of Long Beach tied for second at -1, 212, followed by Scher and Sacramento State's Owen Taylor.
UCSB returns to action on Feb. 10-11 when it travels to Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., to play in The Farms Collegiate Invitational. The tournament will be hosted by the University of San Diego at The Farms Golf Course.
