Strauss, Gauchos Take Lead into Tuesday's Final Round of OGIO UCSB Intercollegiate
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshman Will Strauss shot a 4-under par 68 in the first round and then a balanced second round attack helped host UCSB to a three-shot lead after two rounds of the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate on Monday at Sandpiper Golf Course.
Strauss tied for the lowest score of the first two rounds. Only Owen Taylor (Sacramento State), Casey Halliday (Utah) and Keenan Nelson (Fresno State) matched him and all did so in the second round.
The Gauchos trailed Long Beach State by one shot after the first round. Paced by Kevin Lee, who carded a 3-under par 69, the 49ers led 287-288 after the first 18 holes. Brett Silvernail, who finished the first two rounds at 2-over par 146, logged a 1-under par first round. In addition to Lee, Long Beach had Agostino Milazzo and Daniel Chian shoot even-par in the first round.
Sacramento State, which sits in second-place entering the final round, hit a 291 in each of the first two rounds. The Hornets, who trail the Gauchos by three shots, were at 291 in both of those rounds. Taylor's 68 in the second round was their best score, but Robert Parden (71-74-145) was also solid.
Strauss logged a second round score of 4-over par 76 and will enter the final round at even-par and in seventh-place. Silvernail will go into the third round at 2-over par 146 and tied for 14th, while Jordan Epstein and Derek Trofimczuk are both tied for 21st at 3-over par 147.
Utah's Halliday leads the individual standings entering the final round with a 4-under par 140. Nelson is one-shot back at 141, while Taylor and UC Riverside's David Gazzolo are tied for second at 2-under par 142. UCR's Sam Gillis and Long Beach's Agostino Milazzo are tied for fifth at 1-under par 143.
Strauss is in seventh-place entering the final round, but several other UCSB players are among the top-40. Silvernail, at 2-over par, is tied for 14th. Jordan Epstein and Derek Trofimczuk are at 3-over par 147 and are tied for 21st, and Glen Scher is 6-over par 150 and tied for 36th. Scher was 1-under par in the second round.
The teams will continue play on Tuesday morning at Sandpiper Golf Course. The first group will tee-off at 8:00 a.m. from the first hole.
