SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 2018 OGIO-UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate Golf Tournament will take place at scenic Sandpiper Golf Club on the coast just north of Santa Barbara, on Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15. The tournament will be 54 holes, 36 on the first day with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, and 18 on day two, when each team will tee-off on the first hole with the first team going off at 7:30 a.m.
2018 will mark the sixth consecutive OGIO-UCSB Intercollegiate that will be played at Sandpiper. It was also played at the picturesque and challenging course in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The 2017 Big West Golf Championship was also played at Sandpiper. Previous OGIO-UCSB Intercollegiate tournaments were played at Rancho San Marcos, La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc and the Alisal River Course in Solvang.
"Sandpiper is a beautiful and challenging course," said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. "I also think it is good for the schools in the tournament to play a course that really reflects Santa Barbara and Sandpiper certainly does."
In addition to UCSB, the tournament field will include Big West Conference rivals Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside. Weber State and Cal Baptist will round out the 6-team field. There will be several individuals competing as well. The tournament will be a play-six, count-four format as teams prepare for their conference championships.
The 2018 Gauchos are led by junior Nick Swanson, sophomore Brett Bennett and senior Brandon Bauman. In the team's most recent tournament, the Geiberger Invitational at PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta, Swanson shot an 4-under par 212 to finish in fourth place, leading the Gauchos to fifth-place team finish.
The 2016 OGIO-UCSB Intercollegiate team competition was won by Cal Poly, while CSUN's Felix Mory, who will compete as a senior this year, won the individual medalist honors with an 8-under par 208. Mory finished four shots ahead of UCSB's Bauman. Past individual champions have included Craig Stadler (1973), Scott Simpson (1977) and Duffy Waldorf (1985).
