Gauchos Fall to UCI in Championship at Cal Poly Match Play

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara fell to UC Irvine 3-1-1 in the championship match at the Cal Poly Match Play on Tuesday afternoon and Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

The Gauchos' only victory in the title match was Tyler See's 4&3 win over the Anteaters' Nate Irwin at the No 4 spot in the lineup. UCSB's Brandon Jacobs and UCI's Chris Casey were all square for the tie. 

Zach Smith and Brett Bennett, Santa Barbara's No. 1 and No. 2 players respectively, dropped their matches 2&1 to Ramiz Jamal and Anthony Truong respectively. Justin Sheparovich fell 4&2 to Matt Gunson. 

UCSB defeated Sacramento State 3-1-1 early Tuesday, advancing to the championship match. In the semifinal match against the Hornet, Bennett crushed Josh Diaz, 6&2, See cruised past Riley Bell 5&3, and Jacobs topped Joe Fowler, 3&2. 

The Gauchos defeated Weber State on Monday in a quarterfinal match.

UCSB returns to regular play at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Monday-Tuesday, April 8-9. The Cowboy Classic will be played at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
