SAN DIEGO - UC Santa Barbara shot a 299 in the third and final round of the 2006 Callaway Golf Invitational, to leap-frog UC Davis and finish in a tie for ninth on Tuesday.
The Gauchos saved their best for last. The 299 was four shots better than their previous best round in the tournament and it was the third best final round shot by any team in the tournament. UCSB finished tied with Colorado State for ninth with a 913.
Joe Ryon led UCSB with a 22nd-place finish at 226. Tony Verna was one-back of Ryon at 227, good for a 26th-place finish. Greg Wells shot 230 to tie for 37th, Marty Melcher shot 233 to tie for 45th and Sean Meier shot 250 to finish 79th.
San Diego State won the tournament by 12 shots over the University of San Diego, the host school.
UCSB returns to action on March 27 when it travels to the Western Open at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.
